As we move further into 2003, I'd like to take a minute and ask you to revisit some of your “New Year's Resolutions” for this year. Many of us have great intentions as a new year starts- who doesn't love a fresh, new beginning?- though we tend to lose this excitement as time goes on and we might not be any closer to attaining our desires.

This aspect came into high relief this month as I had several clients who were going rocky patches in their love relationship. Marcia, for example, had been dating Todd for almost a year. In the beginning, things were wonderful- they thought alike and shared many wonderful things. However, part of the way into their relationship, Todd got a great job offer in another state, and he chose to move. Marcia and Todd decided to maintain their relationship over the distance, and this seemed like a great decision, initially. They had fun times meeting up for the weekends, but also had “space” to see their friends during the week- there was a continuation of the initial excitement and attraction. A few months passed.

Suddenly, Todd began to call less frequently, and was “busy” whenever Marcia tried to reach him. When they did talk, it seemed like “old times”- but these conversations were getting fewer and farther between. Marcia began to struggle with the amount of distance and space in their relationship, and brought this to our coaching call one day.

At the start of the coaching call, Marcia was angry and upset about Todd's behavior- she felt hurt and betrayed, and felt that he might be trying to end their relationship- which upset her even further. She was coming to realize that she continued to have very strong feelings for him and couldn't contemplate not having him in her life. There was a strong, fiercely independent side of her, as well, and this side kept saying, “He could call you if he wanted. He's not calling, so he must not want to.” Marcia felt stuck and wasn't sure what she wanted to do.

Meanwhile, Todd was going through a lot of changes at work. While he liked his new position, and was getting used to his new city, he also began to experience the desire of starting his own business. He wasn't sure how to bring this up to Marcia, as he knew that she valued stability and security over everything else. He felt stuck and wasn't sure what he wanted to do.

Through coaching, Marcia got clear that what she really wanted was to move and be with Todd. She felt anxious and worried about presenting this to him, but finally pulled her courage together, and told him. She explained that the distance had not been working for her, and that she really wanted to be with him. She felt that their relationship was slowing fading away, and that she didn't want this happen. Todd was really surprised at this, but, then, he, too, shared that he cared deeply for her and wanted to continue their relationship. He shared his desire to possibly begin a new business, and how he hesitated to bring this up with her because he knew how much she valued stability and security.

As of this writing, Marcia has moved, and now lives in the same city as Todd. Todd has taken the first few steps to start his own business, and their relationship is now much stronger.

In having the courage to follow her dream by pursuing this relationship, Marcia gave Todd freedom to do the same thing by pursuing his own business.

How you can apply this to your life: If you have any dreams you've not dared to follow- start now. Take some action, no matter how big or small, and you might find that the rewards are greater than you ever dared imagine.
